Teaching Commons has scheduled a two-hour “Teaching Indigenous content” workshop on how to teach Indigenous content ethically.

Indigenous students have voiced concern about the detrimental effects of instructors teaching incorrect info about Indigenous world views and perpetuating stereotypes.  Instructors who wants to teach about  Indigenous issues in a good way but do not have immediate experience with Indigenous knowledge systems may also feel a sense of anxiety when they encounter Indigenous material.

With a diverse community of Indigenous students, staff, and faculty on campus, York has the opportunity to share experiences and disseminate good practices regarding teaching Indigenous issues and enhancing educational opportunities for Indigenous students.

During this workshop, we will

• share stories of past successes and failures
• suggest ways to ethically teach Indigenous content, and
• make recommendations for future improvements in this area
