Ingredients: An equal number of red, yellow, and green cards (these can be made from construction paper or other material) for each participant (*Each participant should have a 1 red, 1 yellow, and 1 green card)
Method: Handout cards to participants & explain what each colour means:
Red = I'm stuck/This is tough
Yellow = I'm getting there but I still need help
Green = I get it/This makes sense
Participants hold up one card to indicate their response to questions that will help them self-assess their learning/comprehension. Possible prompts could include:
- How would you rate your level of understanding of today's lesson?
- How are you finding your learning/the lesson today?
Special Notes: This can also work as a way to collect initial opinions about a topic (e.g. red means I don't like it, yellow means I'm not sure/neutral, green means I like it) as part of an informal poll to begin and/or break up a session
Acknowledgements: I've seen this used in multiple ways in various settings and presentations. This definitely isn't an original idea but it can be used in a variety of different ways to collect valuable formative assessment data.
