Giving Feedback that Encourages a Growth Mindset

Thursday, October 12, 2017, 10:30am-12pm

Students with a growth mindset believe their abilities are malleable and can grow and change with effort and experience. They are resilient, persevere through challenges, work toward overcoming deficiencies and seek out feedback to learn from their mistakes. These are all qualities we want our students to have. So how can we help them to attain these qualities?

In this webinar, participants will reflect on their assessment process and the feedback they give to students, both verbally in class and in written form on assessments. Together we will brainstorm additional strategies you can use to assess learning and provide feedback to your students that encourages a growth mindset.

We encourage course directors to invite their TAs (should you have TAs with marking and grading duties for your course). Together you can review your assessments for your course and plan strategies for assessment and feedback that encourages a growth mindset.

Active learning strategies

Graduates of programs in higher education are expected to acquire both professional and social competencies in order to be successful in the knowledged-based society. As such, teachers in higher education institution are instrumental in the development of these competencies, critical thinking and inquiry, and collaboration with peers or colleagues. To facilitate in these developmental processes, university teachers may incorporate new methods and strategies to enhance learning and invite students to participate actively in their own learning (Duarte, 2015; Kaplan et al., 2010). Join the Teaching Commons webinar to discuss and dialogue active learning strategies and to explore what can be done that will make both small and large classes interactive and engaging. For more ideas and suggestions on active learning strategies, please visit our Teaching Strategies link within the resources section of our website.

Make your lecture class interactive with technology

Empirical studies suggest that increased student engagement in the classroom might lead to improved student achievement. Classroom lecture can be engaging and interactive if students are asked to actively interact with the instructors and peers and apply the information that they’ve received rather than simply watching, listening, and taking notes. This workshop will introduce a couple of easy-to-use classroom technologies to help integrate different activities into classroom lectures to engage students with their peers, instructors, and materials actively.
