Supervision and Mentorship in the Changing Landscape of Graduate Education
The Teaching Commons and the Faculty of Graduate Studies are pleased to offer two half day workshops for Doctorate and Masters Supervisors at York University.
The two workshops are complementary, one in the Fall and another in the Winter semester. Both workshops are offered on two different dates. Supervisors are strongly encouraged to attend both workshops.
The learning outcomes for the workshops are:
Fall Workshop:
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Identify the key issues in graduate supervision
- Discuss FGS guidance for successful supervision
- Identify examples of good practice in graduate supervision
- Articulate the key issues regarding mental health and graduate supervision
- Consider program wide improvements to graduate supervision
Fall workshop will take place on:
September 12 9am to 12 noon OR September 14, 1.30 to 4.30pm CANCELLED
November 16 9am to 12 noon OR 1.30 to 4.30pm

Winter Workshop:
By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Reflect on the common issues facing international graduate students and the support available
- Articulate the support available for graduate students who are TAs and or those facing difficulties
- Identify and use a range of means to obtain feedback from colleagues and students
- Apply processes and approaches designed to ensure the timely completion of a graduate degree.
Winter workshop will take place on:
January 16 9am to 12 noon OR January 18, 1.30 to 4.30pm

Each workshop lasts for 3 hours and will be held at the Keele campus. If Graduate Program Directors would like to host either or both workshops tailored for their program’s supervisors, this can be arranged, providing we have a minimum of six participants.

Graduate supervision symposium
On March 14th 2018 we will host a one day symposium for all who supervise graduate students at York. This half day event will showcase good practice and innovative approaches to graduate supervision.
