TA Certificate in Teaching (TACT)

This EDC (Educational Developers Caucus) accredited course is for Teaching Assistants to learn more about teaching in post-secondary education. It comprises 5 three hour face to face sessions plus an additional online component (4 online modules). Through EDC and your completion of TACT, you will become part of an international network of people engaged in teaching and learning in higher education.

This free course will be run in both the Fall and Winter terms. (Please note you need only register for one term). You MUST have at least ONE term experience as a TA to be eligible to take this course. Preferential access will be given to those who have completed the 'Record of Completion' Certificate.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will

  • Use a variety of appropriate approaches to enable learning
  • Use a variety of methods for evaluating their role in supporting learning
  • Plan for their initial and continuing professional development
  • Undertake appropriate development activities
  • Review their development and their practice and the relations between them

Assessments

In addition to attending and participating actively in the 5 face-to-face sessions, participants are expected to complete each of the 4 online modules, which consist of readings, videos, activities and discussions with their small group of peers.  The final, summative, assessment for the course is a teaching dossier.   To prepare participants to create their teaching dossier, they are asked to create a 2 minute reflective video as well as a 10-minute mini-lesson that they will teach to their small group of peers during the last face-to-face session and receive feedback that they can reflect on as part of their teaching dossier.
