Certificate in Teaching Practices

This certificate offers course directors and librarians a flexible framework for further developing your understanding of university teaching and integrating a range of teaching strategies focused on student learning.

How does it help me?

You will receive a certificate that is recognized at York and beyond. It can support your dossier as you progress in your teaching career or apply for teaching awards.

By completing the certificate, you will better be able to:

  • Consider the many factors informing how to plan a course, design classroom activities, and assess students;
  • Address the diverse needs of your learners;
  • Identify ways to enhance student engagement in your classes;
  • Connect with other instructors and teaching & learning communities at York.

How much time do I need to commit?

You will spend approximately 6 days on professional development spread over one year.

What do I need to do to get it?

  • Book an individual consultation by emailing Mandy Frake-Mistak at  mfmistak@yorku.ca to learn about the certificate requirements and develop an individual learning plan to achieve your goals
  • Complete an Instructional Skills Workshop; a three day-intensive professional development opportunity;
  • Select and attend a minimum of 3 workshops, ranging from a few hours to a full day, on a variety of teaching and learning topics;
  • Once all these requirements are fulfilled, apply for the certificate via our online submission system;
  • For your certification application, you will need to provide:
    • The list of workshops you have attended;
    • A teaching philosophy statement (500-800 words);
    • A reflective summary of your learning (350-500 words).
